For those facing financial hardship, a stimulus check in South Dakota can be a source of great relief. There are no new stimulus updates for residents of the state for 2024, but the federal government offers many other assistance programs for low-income Americans.

South Dakota taxpayers can also take advantage of the state’s property tax relief measures. Read on to learn more about your options, who can apply, and how much you can get.

Is There a Stimulus Check in 2024 for South Dakota?

There are no new stimulus checks for South Dakota residents in 2024. Other than the three Economic Impact Payments that were issued during the coronavirus pandemic, President Biden or Congress have no plans to issue any more stimulus payments in South Dakota or in any other state.

While the relief measures introduced through the American Rescue Plan and the CARES Act have since expired, you can still claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit by filing your tax returns by April 15, 2025.

South Dakota Stimulus Check 2024

South Dakota doesn’t have any state-level tax credits, like the Child Tax Credit (CTC), Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), or the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit (CDCTC). However, you can still claim any available federal tax credits for which you may qualify.

Instead, homeowners in the state can take advantage of a number of property tax relief measures to get some relief from paying taxes.

How do South Dakota Stimulus Checks Work?

Property tax relief programs are not stimulus programs per se, but they are used by the government to provide relief to eligible applicants. Property tax relief can release you from having to pay all or part of your property tax.

In most cases, property tax relief or exemptions waive or reduce taxes for veterans, surviving spouses, low-income residents, elderly homeowners, and disabled individuals.

“South Dakota law prohibits the sale of the home of a person aged seventy or more for delinquent real estate taxes. However, after the death of the owner (or his or her unmarried surviving spouse), the home is subject to the unpaid taxes,” explains Brad Reichert, the founder and managing director of Reichert Asset Management LLC.

“These taxes are very important for any surviving family members to know about and pay for as soon as possible since there are real estate investors out there who utilize methods of acquiring property ownership through delinquent property taxes,” warns Reichert. “This is called property tax lien investing,” he adds.
